Water does not usually kill a phone in the first minute. What kills it is electricity flowing through wet components and the corrosion that builds up over the next hours and days. What you do in the first hour makes a big difference to whether the phone — and your data — can be saved.
Do this immediately
- Take it out and switch it off. If it is already off, leave it off. Do not test whether it “still works”.
- Do not charge it. Plugging in a wet phone is the most common way a small problem becomes a dead board.
- Remove the case and SIM tray so trapped water can escape.
- Wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth and keep the phone upright with the charging port facing down.
- Bring it to a repair lab the same day if it was salt water, sea water, tea, juice or any sugary drink. These corrode much faster than clean water.
Do not do this
- No hair dryer or heat gun. Heat can damage the display, swell the battery and push water deeper.
- No rice. Rice does not pull water out of the board, and the starch dust gets into ports. It only wastes the time in which corrosion is starting.
- Do not press buttons repeatedly or shake the phone hard.
- Do not trust “water resistant” ratings on older phones — seals weaken with age, drops and battery swelling.
What a proper water-damage service involves
At Prasad Cell Care the phone is opened, the battery is disconnected first, and the board is inspected under a microscope. Corroded areas are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath with the right solution, then dried and checked component by component. If a power line or chip has already failed, we repair it at chip level. Only after this do we power the phone up and test every function.
Why some phones die days later
A phone that works after falling in water can still fail a week later. Moisture left under shields and chips keeps corroding the connections. That is why we recommend a cleaning service even if the phone seems fine — it costs far less than a motherboard repair later.
Can my data be recovered?
In many cases, yes. Even when the phone is not worth fully repairing, the board can often be revived long enough to back up photos and contacts. Tell us if data is the priority and we will plan the work around it.
